Open in new windowIt’s natural in our busy lives that people feel over whelmed sometimes, especially when you are making big changes in your life. Following are a few tricks to feel like everything is under control and stress free:

Plan your week

At the beginning of each week make a big master list of everything you need to do that week. Then take a look through your diary and schedule in when you are going to get everything done and give yourself a deadline for each task. Just the process of getting everything you need to do out of your head and into your diary really helps.

Prioritise

When you have your big list of things that you really need to do that week or each day have a look at it objectively to really consider how important each task is. Sometimes we feel like we need to be doing things that actually can be put off until we have a bit more spare time. If you are working for someone else who gives you a lot to do then explain you are going through a busy period and ask them to prioritise their list for you. Then set realistic expectations for them as to when they are likely to hear back from you on them and agree these time lines with them.

Get a good nights sleep

Often when we feel overwhelmed we don’t sleep well as there is so much going around our heads. Tiredness can add to the feeling of there is just too much to do. Just before you go to bed ensure you have everything in your head that you need to get done the next day written down on a list, ideally just pick the top six things then you can always add extra things to them once they are completed the next day. Too many things on a to do list can lead to overwhelm. Once it is all out on paper and planned in then take some long slow deep breaths. Breathe in through your nose for a count of 5, hold your breath for a count of 5 and release for a count of 5, repeat this 10 times. In this relaxed state ask yourself what you are grateful for in your life and then drift off to sleep.

Lavender is also well known so helping induce sleep so a hot bath with lavender oil or a few drops on your pillow will help you to relax.

Give yourself some time out

When you are busy it’s very easy to keep going with out taking breaks but this does not help your energy levels or mental alertness. Always ensure you have at least half an hour in the day just to your self to relax away from what you are doing. Make sure you have a day off in the week as well to do what ever you feel like doing and plan something for that day that makes you happy.
