Water Tastes Good!

Open in new windowFor years, parents, adults, teenagers and children were running to fast food restaurants for a quick meal, substituting meats and vegetables for processed hamburgers and fries. And when the person behind the cash registered ask and what will you drink with that meal? The person would respond by choosing soft drink or a fruit drink filled with sugar. Now after years of bad eating habits obesity has caught up to us. Did you know that 50% of the nation is overweight (passed the normal weight for their height and gender)?

This is a serious problem that has to be nipped in the butt immediately. A recent study found that because of the rapid rise in obesity rates, today’s youth may become the first generation to live shorter lives than their parents. Obesity significantly increases the risk of serious chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. Despite the proven benefits of physical activity, more than 50% of area adults do not get enough physical activity to provide health benefits. According to the Institute of Medicine, in 1969, an average of 48 percent of all students 90 percent living no more than a mile away walked or bicycled to school. In 1999, only 19 percent of children walked to or from school and 6 percent rode bicycles to school.

We need to make serious changes in our daily lives. People and food companies are starting to realize this too. For instance, these days, bottled water is not necessarily just water. Store shelves and vending machines are filled with plain and so-called "fitness waters," full of vitamins, minerals, and herbal minerals. Some waters not only come with additional nutrients, but contain soluble fiber, fruit essence, caffeine, and even oxygen.

Everyone should drink at least eight to ten glasses of water a day. We need to drink plenty of water to keep our bodies well hydrated and our energy level up. This could be one of the reasons many people avoid exercise. They don’t consume enough of water therefore, their energy level is low and because of this they choose to avoid exercising. And in the long-run their physical health is slowly going down the tubes.
The problem is we get tired drinking large volumes of water with no taste to it. So what should you do? Turn to fitness waters. Fitness waters are low-calorie beverages to help us meet your fluid requirements.

Most of the fitness waters are low in calories and have only few calories. Fitness waters pose little threat to your daily eating plan if you’re watching your weight. If you enjoy drinking them and they help you meet your fluid needs. For best selection, read the label.

What about coffee, tea, or foods that contain fluids?

You can also satisfy approximately half of your fluid requirements with beverages other than water, such as low-fat milk, caffeine-free tea, 100% juice, sports drinks, or sparkling water. Not only can drinking these beverages satisfy your fluid needs, so can water-rich foods and fluids such as soup, fruits, and vegetables. The additional benefit of eating water-rich foods is all the fibre, vitamins, and minerals they provide, which will not only quench thirst but also keep you feeling full.

The foods below are filled with fluids:

• Gelatin
• Frozen yogurt
• Low-calorie frozen novelty bars
• Broth-based vegetable soup is low in calories, full of nutrients, and will make you feel full.

Fruits and vegetables filled with fluid:

• Grapes
• Watermelon
• Grapefruit
• Oranges
• Squash
• Broccoli
• Aubergine.

These fruits and vegetables can contribute up to 3-4 cups of fluid to your diet.

Ways you can flavor your water:

• Create your own flavored water with the addition of fruit slices such as lemon, lime, or orange. They will all add great flavor with virtually no added calories.

• Freeze chunks of fruit or citrus zest in ice cubes that you then use to flavor plain water.

• A dash of cranberry

• A dash of fruit juice

• A wedge of lime to turn plain sparkling water into flavored water.

• Make iced tea from a combination of flavorful teas such as mint, mango, or cherry.

• Herbal teas come in a variety of flavors without extra calories.

• Flavored Sparking mineral waters without added sugars are energising water alternatives.

• Homemade lemonade or ice tea. Packets that are low in sugar or use nutra-sweet

• Now certain ice tea companies make ice tea or lemonade to go- these are small packets to carry in your purse or pocket to flavor your water.

Limit your intake of caffeine, artificially sweetened, and alcoholic beverages. These beverages can take fluids from your body and cause dehydration.

Regardless of your choice of beverage, the most important thing is to drink plenty of water Also, make sure you’re in good health, encourage your family and friends to eat healthy and try to exercise at least twice a week.

It helped me to change my attitude and give me ideas on how I can like the things I'm not too keen on more, within the job; how I can adjust my thinking to find ways to improve myself and in turn the happiness in my work.
