I always wear plain black, I see people looking great in these fantastic colours and prints but they just look silly on me. Should I just stick to what I know? The first thing to consider here is why do you always wear black? Is it because it’s “safe” and you are not clear on what other colours will suit you? Or perhaps it’s because its slimming and you think other colours will make you look larger. Maybe you simply have a very classic style so bright colours and details seem like they detract from this.
People often stick to certain safe colours and get so stuck using them that they can’t see beyond to what other colours they will look great in. Black is safe, it’s not a colour that clashes and it is slimming but to wear it all the time can run the risk of never looking any different or not expressing your personality. If you have a light natural colour it can also be a very draining colour if worn near your face.
Next time you go shopping think about colours you like and experiment with a few in the changing room. Try out some different shades or the same colour to work out which is best for you. I can guarantee when you wear a new colour you will get so many comments if people are used to seeing you in black everyday! If you would like to learn all the most flattering colours for you then a colour consultation will do just this. You will be shown with colour drapes which colours are best for your natural colouring and you will be left with a colour swatch booklet that you can take to the shops with you.
It is a myth that only black is slimming. Wearing the same colour top and bottom is the most slimming, this is because it creates an uninterrupted vertical line which draws the eye from top to bottom thus elongating the figure, it you break it by using a different colour then that adds a horizontal line across your body.
Horizontal lines shorten or widen any where they are placed. So this is why most people think to wear all black is the most slimming but you can actually get the same effect with other colours, or even just by blending your colours so they just softly merge into each other. Another trick is to match the colour of your shoes with your top which again draws the eye up and down.
