Nutrition Made Simple |
||
Eating right is not something that comes naturally to many of us. Whether we've grown up with poor eating habits or we've learning them completely on our own, healthy nutrition is simply not the way most of us are raised. But when you want to eat better, you need to learn the basics of what makes for good nutrition and what will make your life healthier.Why Nutrition is Important Just like the petrol you put into your automobile, you need to put the proper fuel into your body in order to allow it to work well. Nutrition is that fuel. Each of the cells in your body undergoes millions of processes each day, all helping your body to live and work in the way that it was meant to work. For example, the white blood cells in your body work to fight off infections in your body, but they need to have certain processes working inside of them in order to be able to do this job. When you give your body plenty of nutrients, the cells can work more efficiently. Good nutrition habits also allow your body to be able to repair itself when it is hurt or damaged. In the case of some cancer patients, it has been shown that eating more wholesome diets can often slow or halt the spread of their cancers. And while these studies are still thought of as inconclusive, they are certainly giving us good reason to think more of the foods we eat each day. The Basics of the Basics Nutrition is actually quite a simple process once it is broken down. But too often, we are simply told that we need to eat 'better,' which is unhelpful unless we know how to define that process. Here are the basic food groups that our diets can be broken down into: Carbohydrates Proteins Vegetables and fruits Dairy Of course, these food groups have been broken down into different categories as well and placed into different schematics and diagrams, but there are easier ways to dealing with the idea of nutrition. Eating a balanced and moderate diet is the best advice. What Does That Mean? The idea of what is and what is not balanced is something that's trickier to define. While we know when we have eaten something that is not good for our bodies, if we're not used to knowing what is good for the body, it can be harder to make choices that will help it. Here are the basic choices that you need to make in order to have a healthy diet: Eat about six servings of carbohydrates a day This includes whole grains like wheat and barley. You want to choose things like complex carbohydrates that aren't white in colour, but rather those that are brown and dense. Serving sizes should be about a cup of the grains, or about the size of a fist. Eat two to three servings of protein a day By choosing lean meats and poultry, you can add protein to your diet. Serving sizes should be about the size of the palm of your hand and as thick. If you're vegetarian or just want to avoid meats, you can also choose a cup of beans or lentils. Nuts and eggs are also a part of this group, so feel free to add these as well, but sparingly as they have a higher fat content. Eat five to nine servings (or more) of fruits and vegetables With more produce, you get the full vitamins and minerals that you need for the day. Try to find fresh, organic produce whenever you can to add to your daily routine. Eat about two to three servings of low fat dairy By adding yogurt, milk, and cheese to your daily diet, you will make sure that you have enough calcium and protein. Other Things that Increase Your Nutrition What you might want to realise too is that it's not just what you eat, but also how much you eat of certain items. In the case of sugars and fats, you should still add these to your diet, but only on occasion. They should be looked at as more like treats rather; something to enjoy just not all the time. However, this does not mean that you need to shun fats altogether. There are many fats that are good for you called monounsaturated fats. These fats are naturally occurring in food and can even help to prevent heart disease and other cholesterol problems. Examples of these foods include avocados, nuts, and flax seeds. Adding some of these to your diet will help you still feel satisfied by your diet as you will be getting more fat, but they are also not going to cause you the harm that processed fats like trans fats and saturated fats can. A Plan That Anyone Can Follow When you're looking to implement better nutrition into your life, you need to realise that it doesn't have to be difficult otherwise, why would you stick with the plan at all? Here are some easy ways to make sure you are getting adequate nutrition without having to change your entire life: Make sure you get one serving from most food groups at every meal This will ensure that you're getting the sufficient amount of nutrients. Try adding one fruit or vegetable to each meal Snack on a serving a protein and a vegetable or fruit to keep your body full of energy Make it a game Try to see how many nutritious things you can eat each day Buddy up Find a friend that's looking to improve their nutrition as well and make it a contest to see who can be 'better' at eating right Don't do anything that doesn't make sense for your life If you can't eat an apple for a snack everyday and feel satisfied, you won't eat healthfully. You need to find healthy foods that work for you and for your body. With these basic nutrition tips, you will be able to change your diet and start seeing a healthier new life ahead.
