Autumn/Winter Trends 2010

The new season’s clothes are already in the stores and now is a great time to snap them up to ensure you get the most wear out of them over the next six months. Clothes this season are quiet, functional and hard wearing, with people still being a bit careful with money the trends are being made to last. There is also a bit of luxury and embellishment to cheer us up in the winter months!

Following is a summary of some of the key trends this season:

Animal Print – This is just one pattern that never seems to die! I love it, you can’t help but feel a little sexy when wearing it. Stand out in zebra, leopard and tiger prints. Remember to consider if you have a warm or cool undertone when picking your print, only golden warm colourings will look good in the camels and browns.

Soft Leather – Look out for beautiful accessories, sexy trousers and jackets that fit you like a glove.

Edgy Lace – Lace has a harder edge this winter, think rock chick and lace mixed with other textures. Great for those who like dressing in a romantic style but don’t want to be too girlie.

Aviator Jackets – Shearling (a sheep or lamb skin pelt that has suede leather one side and shorn fibres on the other) is this season’s key texture. An aviator jacket is a new replacement for the classic biker jacket and will look great thrown over any outfit.

Long skirts – After the success of the maxi dress this summer, hemlines have stayed low for skirts through the winter. Look out for warm knit versions to be really cosy and comfortable.

Chunky and textured knits – In preparation for another cold winter, knitwear is thick, chunky and with lots of different textures. Be aware of this if you are very petite, it will drown you! Texture on any areas you are conscious of can also make you look bigger so just be careful with it.

The Cape – This is going to be one of the season’s key shapes for a coat. You’ll find casual utility capes, which are a bit like a parka with a hood, smart wool winter coats and tailored cape jackets that can be worn with a skirt for work.

Camel – Camel is this season’s “new black”, a luxury looking neutral. Be aware though, if you have cool undertones to your skin it will make you look sickly – go for grey instead which is still popular this year.

High waisted tailored trousers – Look out for beautifully flattering high waisted wool flared trousers for work. Will look great with heels and a fitted jacket. Very Charlie’s Angels!

Boot cut – hoorah, flattering boot cut trousers are back after a season of tapered or skinny trousers which, let’s face it, are not best if you are on the curvaceous side.

Velvet – Luxe fabric for winter party outfits. A velvet jacket will look fab with a pair of jeans.

Embellishment – no surprise here then, embellishment has been everywhere for the past couple of years. Great for eye catching dresses and interesting knitwear.

Next month Louise will be discussing men’s trends for the winter season.
