Feeling stressed? How to pull yourself out of a hole. |
||
| No matter how much positive thinking you do there are still likely to be moments in your life when things start to get a bit of top of you. Sometimes it’s hard to be clear exactly why you are stressed or what needs to be done to get you out of this state. It all just gets a bit too much and rather than being constructive you might just end up walking around in a stress bubble making things seem even worse!
Following is a step by step way of how to pull yourself out of it: 1) Put aside some time just for you to sit quietly. Turn your phone off and any other distractions. 2) Breathe. Take some deep breaths, really feel your stomach expand with air and then release it all out. 3) Take some paper and work through each of the following areas in your life writing down what is working and what is not in them. Grade each one on a scale of 1-10 how satisfied you are in that area, 10 being the most happy. Love/ Relationships Health and Fitness Family Friendships/Social Life Vocation/Work Money Personal Development Emotional Spiritual 4) From doing that exercise hopefully it will have given you some clarity on what is not working. Now ask yourself for each area that you are unhappy in what needs to happen to get you out of this? What needs to happen for you to get control of the situation again? For example if you are feeling unhealthy, guilty about not doing exercise and bad for eating too much chocolate what will make you feel better? Perhaps cutting out sugar for a while or starting some regular exercise? Or maybe you are worried about money, would working out a monthly/weekly budget help? Would looking for a new job or some extra work make you feel better? 5) Once you have worked through each area and created a list of things this is now your master action list! Remember it might not be possible to do everything in one go so get your diary out and plan when you are going to do all these things. 6) Finally, take a few minutes to reflect over the list of what is working and write down all the things you are grateful for right now in your life. It is very hard to feel upset in a moment of gratitude. |
