Discipline v Freedom |
||
| Many of us have freedom as a high value in our lives, we talk about never wanting to give up our freedom and we go to great lengths to keep the feeling of total independence. But how many of us actually feel free? Does your health allow you to do the things you want to do? Are you fully self expressed in your relationships? Do you have the money to do what you want to do?
Often if you value freedom the word discipline can make you want to recoil in horror. It conjures up connotations of rules, having to do something, being told what to you and total lack of freedom. However the key to achieving the freedom you desire can actually be found through discipline. Let me explain....by being disciplined around money for example setting up a savings plan, paying off debts, thinking about what you want to achieve and setting aside money for it will allow you in the future to have the freedom to do what you want as you will have the money to do it. By being disciplined around your health, taking regular exercise, eating a healthy diet that is right for your body and lifestyle will give you the energy to get all you want to do done. By being disciplined around your career and personal development you will excel at whatever you do, again giving you more choices and freedom in the future. Being disciplined with yourself around relationships, for example not settling for second best, creating your vision of what you want then going for it and ensuring you are being fully self expressed at all times will ensure you have the relationships you want. The word discipline is highly linked to the word will power. If you really want something strengthening your will power to help you achieve it will be invaluable. Will power is like a muscle, over time you can strengthen it so it become so strong that you are only ever totally on track to achieving your dreams. How to strengthen your will power: • Think of something that isn’t really working for you, something that isn’t leading you towards your goals. For example eating chocolate or binge drinking every weekend if you have a health goal. • Focus on your goal, what you want to achieve and make a decision to cut down or give something up. • See if there is anything you can replace it with, something that you will enjoy to but is good for you. • Keep your mind on the goal and give up whatever you have chosen to. • The first few weeks will be the toughest as you will be adjusting to change – stick with it and keep your mind on your goal. Any time you feel like going backwards, say to yourself “I can do this and enjoy it but is it really moving me towards what I want in my life?” Make a stand for what you want out of life. • Plan other small challenges that will require will power and as you start achieving them the muscle with strengthen. Will power and discipline might seem like tough words but actually they will help you live a life you love and give you the freedom you desire. |
