Louise’s Top 10 Recommended Personal Development Books

There are so many personal development and spiritual books out there that it’s often hard to know where to start. Following are a few of my favourites that I often recommend to people I am coaching.

1) The Breakthrough Experience by John Demartini

John Demartini is my absolute favourite! This book is based on his weekend seminar called The Breakthrough Experience. It describes itself as a “real and practical manual for understanding why you live the way you do and how to transform your life into your highest vision”. You can work through anything you feel you need a breakthrough around whilst reading this book, there are lots of great exercises to really get you thinking and make sure you get one in any area.

2) The Artists Way by Julia Cameron

This book is all about unlocking your creativity. You really have to follow it and do all the exercises she sets but it’s a really fun experience. For example each week you have to take your self off on an “artists date” doing something that you love, that makes you smile and you haven’t done for a while. Simply just planning in to do something like this each week does give you a huge shift in your state of mind.

3) Heart of Love by John Demartini

This Demartini book is focused on relationships. He discusses the importance of our values in our relationships and how to get balance. A very powerful book to learn new insights into this area and appreciate our relationships more, good or bad.

4) Awaken the Giant Within by Anthony Robbins

This is a classic and lots of his ideas and techniques are used in the New Insights coaching model, which is who I have been trained by. All very common sense and easy to read, for someone new to personal development this is a must.

5) The E Myth by Michael E Gerber

If you are running your own business this has got to be on the top of your list to read. The idea is to step out of actually doing the work/ your service and think of the business as a whole, to get it to a state where you could franchise it if you wanted. This then means that further down the line you will be able to step back and let others run your business for you whilst you reap the rewards. Really simply written and enjoyable to read.

6) You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay

Such a lovely book!! A must for anyone who doubts themselves and does not have self acceptance. The focus is on learning to love and accept yourself for who you are. Louise discusses how illness is brought on by what has happened to us in the past and how we think. She suggests affirmations to heal illness and feel better about your self.

7) The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle

This is also a classic. The theme is on being present, living in the moment. Most of us spend our time worrying about the future or fretting about the past, this book is all about the power of living in the now. There are some great mediation examples to use in the book.

8) The Secret

This book has taken the world by storm. It was first produced as a DVD documentary with various modern day philosophers (inc Dr John Demartini) discussing the concept. The concept being that you get what you focus on and how when you realise this you can then create anything you want in your life using the power of your thoughts.

9) The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

Paulo Coelho is an amazing fiction writer; all of his books have a message about life. The Alchemist is his most famous and well read one. It is a simple fable about listening to your heart and following your dreams.

10) Rich Dad Poor Dad

This book is a tale of a boy who had a “poor dad” and was taught about money from his friends “rich dad”. From both dads he learnt insights on how to deal with money and the main focus of the book is how to become financially free.

Ugh…what were you thinking? You’ve completely pigged out and now you feel awful. Can you recover? Or is one binge going to undo all your hard work? Or, let’s be honest, perhaps it was more like a month of overdoing it. Is it possible to pull it together without sliding down that slippery slope of overeating, weight gain and general self-loathing that so often accompanies overindulgence? Of course you can! You can always rebound from any decadence.
